WH Golf Wins

The WH Panthers post season hopes stay alive with today's win over Middleboro 230-277 at Ridder Farm Golf Club.

The team's win was special for a few reasons: it got them back to 8-8 overall, which keeps them in contention for the state tournament qualifier, it was the team's lowest total score on the season, beating their previous best by 7 strokes, and lastly, it was the team's last home match on the season, which made the day bittersweet for the five seniors on the team.

Today was an unofficial senior day at the course, as all five seniors were in the line-up for the final time at Ridder. The entire team was their to witness the victory and to cheer them on. Pat Tyler and Joe Young both shot 3 over par, Capt Cole Manning shot 4 over par, Capt Gerry Devlin shot 6 over par, and Adam Young shot 8 over par. As each senior came off the 9th green for the final time as a Panther in match play, they were congratulated by their team with a round of applause and a hug from their coach.

"It was a special day today for so many reasons and I'm really happy with how the team responded and played" said coach Brian Dempsey after the match. "Not only did we really need the win today to keep our chances alive to make the tournament as a team, but I wanted the seniors to have a memorable day as well - the entire team being there at end of the match and clapping for each senior coming off the 9th green was really cool. It was great to see everyone come together like that."

Aside from the seniors' play, junior Luke Tamulevich finally got the monkey off his back by getting back into the 30s at home with a 5 over par performance. Junior John Murphy matched his play as well to add the team's season record setting score. Freshman Owen Manning was 7 over on the day, as he played side by side in the match with his big brother Cole for the first and possibly last time.

The team will travel to Martha's Vineyard on Columbus Day hoping to clinch a playoff berth for what would be the third consecutive season. The Panthers defeated the Islanders at home on Monday, but only by 9 strokes, and playing at the prestigious Farm Neck Golf course will not be an easy task.
